Argentinians and Peruvians lead the way as South America wraps U21 qualifying

 
Asuncion, Paraguay, April 15, 2019 – Argentina’s men and Peru’s women won gold as the South American Volleyball Confederation (CSV) completed their qualifying programme for the Udon Thani, FIVB Beach Volleyball U21 World Championships on Sunday. 

Mauro Zelayeta and Bautista Amieva won men’s gold with a 2-0 (21-17, 22-20) defeat of Chile’s Vicente Droguett and Martin Iglesias. In the women’s gold medal match Lisbeth Allca and Alexandra Mendoza beat Ecuador's Ariana Castro Jarrin and Karelys Simisterra Ortiz 2-0 (21-18, 21-12).


“We are very excited about the win and having finished in first place,” Mendoza said. “It is something we have been looking forward to since last year. Thanks to a huge amount of sacrifice, we are reaping rewards, that's why we are happy because now we have finished first and we are going to the World Championships.”

From the three CSV qualifying tournaments five countries per gender have qualified for the U21 World Championships that will take place in Thailand from June 19-23. In the men they are Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador and Uruguay, while in the women’s Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Peru will travel to Thailand. 

In the men’s bronze medal match Brazilians Lucas Sampaio and Gabriel Zuliani defeated Ecuador’s Joffre Jurado and Danny Leon 2-0 (21-15, 21-11), while Paraguay’s Giuliana Poletti and Laura Ovelar completed the women's podium with a 2-1 (18-21, 21-11, 15-13) victory over Bolivia’s Maria Canedo and Melanie Gonzalez.
